Utilize Decision Making While Shooting

Decision Mode© isn’t just another training tool; it’s a scientifically proven method to elevate your players’ performance. A three-month study led by a top neurologist revealed that during traditional “catch and shoot” drills, the brain remains relatively inactive. However, while using Decision Mode©, players’ brains show high levels of activity, engaging critical cognitive functions that are essential in real-game situations.

The Decision Mode© Study

Shoot-A-Way partnered with Performance Psychology out of Michigan to showcase how The new Gun 12K helps athletes sharpen their mental skills through its unique training feature called, Decision Mode©.

Performance Psychology focuses on optimizing the connection between the mind and body to elevate athletic performance.

TJ Nadeau, a 6’5” freshman shooting guard from Detroit Mercy University, trained with The Gun 12K for 5 days a week, 1 hour per session, over a 9-week period. The goal of the study was to see if these new features could boost TJ’s basketball IQ—specifically in shooting and decision-making—by enhancing his brain’s activity and response to in-game situations.

Practice Digs

The Method

  • An EEG cap with 19 electrodes was placed on TJ’s head to measure brain wave activity before and during his shooting drills using The Gun 12K.
  • Increased brain activity, especially in the frontal lobe (responsible for decision-making), was a key indicator of mental growth.
  • The premise of the study was proving that these new features on The Gun 12K were building mental skills associated with making quick game-decisions.

The Training

  • TJ trained on The Gun 12K for one hour per day, five days a week for nine weeks.
  • Time was split between catch & shoot and using Decision Mode©
  • For each workout, the colors and symbols changed, forcing TJ to re-learn and react to new game-situations on The Gun 12K.
  • By the end of the 9 weeks, the player was reacting and responding quicker to the colors and symbols that simulate game situations.

The Study Results

Brain Imaging

  • The baseline EEG Brain Map represents mild activity in the left parietal lobe region of the brain. This area of the brain is trying to read and figure out the visual screen on The Gun 12K.
  • By week 9, the brain demonstrated full activation of both sides of the brain with synchronized activation of the key cognitive neural networks of the brain that drive the Read & Respond paradigm associated mental IQ for shooting and scoring

Complete Neural Activation

  • This final brain image shows complete coherence with activation of all the neural cognitive networks as represented by the yellow and red lines connecting to both hemispheres of the brain.
  • The vivid connections indicate synchronized communication across the brain, suggesting optimal cognitive processing and heightened neural integration.

This was further supported by an increase in TJ’s shooting %, quicker response to the colors flashing and executing the correct move, he was also able to increase the number of colors and their associated moves (increased IQ). TJ felt by the end he was getting into his zone which was reflected in his improved accuracy and efficiency with performing his scoring moves throughout the whole session.

How It Works

Decision Mode© is only available on The new Gun 12K. Here is an overview of how to utilize this exclusive new feature!

You select the colors, you choose your decisions!

Setting Up Decision Mode

  • Activate Decision Mode on the 12K touchscreen
  • Select to either use colors, symbols, words or a combination of the three options.
  • For advanced players, we recommend only colors
  • Program up to 8 custom decisions for a workout
  • Customize the words used for each decision or use our pre-loaded ones.

Dynamic Front Display

  • Once you begin a shooting workout, one of the decisions you programmed will flash on the front screen as the ball is passed out of The Gun 12K.
  • As the player gets comfortable, they will begin to associate a color with a decision instead of reading text or using symbols, increasing their reaction time.
  • The decision is displayed at random with each pass.
  • For advanced players, we recommend only using colors.
